Numbers.
The statistics on NHS Continuing Care published by NHS England in September 2017 reveal the reality for those attempting to secure ongoing funding for care.
There are approximately 80,952 people currently receiving NHS Continuing Healthcare funding. However, this statistic is underwhelming when in 2013, the number of residential care home beds was 244,232. It is suggestive that many people were either unaware of the prospect of having ongoing care funded by NHS Continuing Healthcare funding or were unsuccessful in their application.
Additionally, 10,377 people were assessed as not eligible in the first quarter of 2017/18. Yet, many people are, in fact, entitled to funding. We believe in the importance of having specialist legal representation in the application process to maximise the chances of success.
At Just Caring Legal, we are a specialist law firm who have developed a robust approach to making effective applications, challenging decisions and drafting successful appeals for NHS Continuing Healthcare funding. Through our medico-legal knowledge and expertise, we work closely with families from the initial checklist application process to maximise the chance of success as quickly as possible.
Cutting through the confusion.
However, there is widespread confusion about NHS Continuing Healthcare funding. Many people simply do not realise that there is funding available for them. The result is that people aren’t receiving financial support. Starting from 2018, one objective of Just Caring Legal is to maximise the publicity and understanding of NHS Continuing Healthcare. More people will be able to access the funding they have a right to if they know about it.
We raise awareness through social media, presentations, contacting local MPs, coffee mornings and one to one meetings with families. We believe promoting awareness around NHS Continuing Healthcare is vital. Because of this, we have dedicated staff that can talk to families and answer any questions they may have. We can attend any events and give talks and provide information that you might host. Most of all, we wish to engage people and make them aware of this overlooked source of funding so that families do not have to struggle.
This guidance is available at no initial cost to families who may have a loved one currently in, or about to go into a care home, or may have just been diagnosed with a long-term illness. We hope that through our hands-on support and guidance, the number of applications for NHS Continuing Healthcare Funding will increase. Also, combined with specialist representation, more families will get the funding that their loved ones are entitled to.
